Love That Reaches Out

The Daughters of Charity provide parish pastoral care in the Meishan area of Kaohsiung. Meishan, an indigenous village, is currently experiencing severe depopulation and an aging society. Many young people have migrated to the Kaohsiung metropolitan area, leaving behind a community composed largely of the elderly and preschool-aged children. In this context, the Catholic Church plays a central role in village life. Beyond offering spiritual solace, it has become the most vital social support system.

Sister Nguyen Ngoc Dung has faithfully served the Meishan indigenous village for many years, dedicating her ministry to both the elderly and the children. Among the parishioners is Joseph, who lives with a disability that limits his mobility. While most of his children have migrated to the city, one son remains with him. Yet, because of the demands of work and livelihood, the son is unable to accompany Joseph to the church for Sunday Mass.

Consequently, Sister Nguyen Ngoc Dung drives each Sunday to bring Joseph to the church so he be present in the Eucharist. For Joseph, this weekly journey is a source of deep joy. Being present at Mass allows him not only to participate in the sacred celebration but also to reconnect with fellow parishioners. These moments of worship and fellowship provide him with essential emotional support, strengthening his faith and sense of belonging within the community.
