Indeed, a Sanctuary!
On October 26, Sanctuary, a DC mission which is part of the Diocese of Uijeongbu, participated in a bazaar aimed to help migrants prepare for winter. The event began at 10 a.m. in the courtyard of Nogyang-dong Parish and culminated in a 3 p.m. Mass celebrated by the bishop.
The Sanctuary hosted one of the food booths while the self-help group of former residents. offered Vietnamese Bánh Mì sandwiches and Filipino Turon (banana spring rolls). As the Diocese kindly covered the cost of ingredients, all proceeds from sales became income for our Sanctuary, supporting our ongoing mission.
Various winter clothes and blankets were sold at the bazaar at very low prices, making it possible for many of our former residents to purchase warm clothing and blankets for the season. The five children currently staying at our Sanctuary spent the day joyfully running and playing in the church yard, delighting in the chance to choose toys of their own.
During breaks from selling food, we visited other booths to savor dishes from other countries. For many former residents, it was a joyful reunion after a long time apart. They beamed with pride as visitors enjoyed the food they had prepared — some made sandwiches, others collected coupons, and a few fried the turon. Each person contributed in their own way, and found delight in the shared effort. They even remarked that the food they made themselves was truly delicious!
After the event, we returned to the Sanctuary for a small, heartfelt gathering. Susanna, who has been struggling with depression and taking treatment, shared that she had truly enjoyed herself and hoped to do it again. Seeing her smile after so long filled us with deep relief and gratitude. Sr. Stella shared a portion of the sales proceeds with the former residents who had helped at the booth, and the room was filled with laughter and joy as each person received their earnings.
We give thanks to God for blessing us with a day so full of joy and grace!
