VOICES AND FACES FROM THE GROUND

Daughters of Charity-Cambodia: Artisans of Peace and Hope

Peacemaking, as described in Matthew 5:9, is not simply avoiding conflict but actively pursuing “shalom”—wholeness and reconciliation. A true peacemaker reflects the confidence and kindness of Jesus, guiding others toward dialogue and resolutions shaped by love. This vision stands in stark contrast to the 2025–2026 Thailand–Cambodia border conflict, which displaced hundreds of thousands, claimed lives, and crippled trade and industry, leaving behind deep mistrust among ordinary citizens.

In response, the Sisters encouraged children of the Sacred Heart Parish to pray the Rosary, showing them a filem “Our Lady of Fatima” and teaching its Mysteries. Their devotion grew as Rev. Fr. Abraham Choi called the community to daily Rosary prayer during the height of the conflict—a practice that continues every Wednesday after Mass. Parish children and students also crafted rosaries and bracelets as symbols of peace, unity, and reconciliation.

On the national level, the Catholic Alliance for Charity & Development (CACD), representing more than 20 Catholic NGOs, gathered for its Annual Retreat in Kep Province under the theme “Peace, Reconciliation and Hope” on January 19, 2026. Guided by Bishop Olivier Schmitthaeusler, the retreat responded to global and local crises, urging members to become “Ambassadors of Peace” through tolerance, forgiveness, dialogue, and love. Among the participants was Sr. Evangeline Dunton, D.C., representing the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul Foundation in Khon Kaen.
