Sewing Class “Sews” Compassion and Solidarity
In December 2025, Sister Catherine TANG, DC opened a sewing class in Zhu-Hu, an Indigenous village nestled in Taitung County. Home to Taiwan’s largest Indigenous community, Taitung embraces approximately 78,000 Indigenous people, who account for about 36% of the county’s population.
The sewing class was made possible through the donation of five factory-used sewing machines and a large supply of clothing materials from a recently closed company. These resources provided the foundation for a community initiative rooted in mutual support and service.
A professional sewing teacher was invited to guide the program, and 23 volunteers were recruited. All of the volunteers were Indigenous women and practicing Catholics. They gathered on weekends to sew vests and, at times, took materials home to continue their work. Through their collective effort, a total of 54 vests were completed.
