Christmas Joy at EPHATA HOUSE
Ephata House is a practice and learning space that nurtures the independence of mothers who have transitioned from the Sanctuary (a DC mission house). Made possible through the generous support of a benefactor, Ephata House opened in May of this year and now comes to life each weekend—Saturday and Sunday at lunchtime—serving Vietnamese food: pho, bánh mì sandwiches, condensed milk coffee, and iced Americano. Ephata House offers the mothers hands-on experience in managing a restaurant, equipping them with the skills and confidence to one day establish their own.
The lives of these mothers are demanding. Most work in factories, often assigned the hardest tasks, leading to health problems from repetitive labor. Some rely on family from their home countries to help raise children, while others must provide child support—working overtime and seeing their children only briefly. For those without any support, illness makes life especially difficult. Many therefore choose to settle near the Sanctuary, which continues to accompany them even after they move out.
On December 20, Ephata House hosted a Christmas party with former residents, our benefactor couple, and a Korean language teacher. We shared a festive Vietnamese lunch of hot pot and chả giò, followed by a lively gift exchange. The most coveted present of the day was a cookware set.
We played a Vietnamese bingo game, laughing at the varied pronunciations from participants from the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Venezuela, and Korea. Each call of “What did you say?” sparked more laughter. When someone shouted “Bingo!”, the winners chose their favorite gifts—cosmetics proving most popular. Some celebrated with playful dancing, sending everyone into fits of joy. The benefactor couple remarked it had been a long time since they laughed so heartily, grateful for the cheerful gathering.
Though daily life is often exhausting, gatherings like this bring joy, ease burdens, and renew strength. Many thanked the Sisters for providing such a meaningful space. We pray that the grace of the Child Jesus may abundantly bless all who strive to live faithfully each day.
