Seeds of Charity: The Taiwan Mission Story
In 1959, four Daughters of Charity from the Philippines arrived in Taipei, in northern Taiwan, responding to the invitation of the Dutch Vincentians. Just a few years later, in 1962, another group of four Daughters of Charity from the St. Louise Province in the United States came to Tainan, in southern Taiwan, at the request of the American Vincentians. Though both communities served in Taiwan, they remained members of their respective Provinces—the Philippine Province and the St. Louise Province - USA.

In 1963, Sister Emma Lee entered the seminary of the Philippine Province, marking the beginning of local vocations connected to this mission. The growth of the mission continued, and in 1979 a seminary was opened in Tainan to welcome Chinese Seminary Sisters from both the Philippine and American Provinces.

In 1979, a seminary was opened in Tainan, Taiwan, to serve the Chinese Seminary Sisters from both the Philippine and American provinces. This marked the beginning of a new chapter of formation and mission in the region. Just a year later, on September 27, 1980, the Daughters of Charity from both provinces, united in their mission in Taiwan, formally established the Region of Taiwan as a Quasi-province under the Motherhouse.

The growth of the mission continued, and on May 1, 2001, the Chinese Province was officially established, encompassing both China and Taiwan. This development strengthened the presence and unity of the Daughters of Charity across these territories.

A significant reconfiguration took place on June 4, 2016, when three provinces—the Chinese Province, the Province of Japan, and the Province of the Philippines—were united to form the new Province of St. Louise de Marillac–Asia. This province brought together five countries under one structure: China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, and the Philippines, reflecting a broader vision of collaboration and shared mission across Asia.

As of November 18, 2025, the mission in Taiwan continues to flourish with five Communities: Lourdes in Tianmu, Taipei; St. Joseph Community in Toucheng; the Miraculous Medal Mission in Tainan; St. Mary’s Hospital in Taitung; and the St. Vincent de Paul Community in Liu Guei. These communities continue to embody the enduring spirit of service and unity that has guided the Daughters of Charity.
