Growth and Gratitude: The Bajau Tutorial Class Journey
Education is the key to a brighter future. Yet in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, many Bajau children are unable to attend school due to daunting challenges. Extreme poverty forces families to struggle even for daily meals, leaving children hungry and unable to focus on their studies. Early marriage, discrimination, and the absence of basic literacy skills further limit their opportunities. Many also lack the motivation and support needed to pursue education. These barriers, taken together, dim the promise of learning and hinder the path toward success.
The Bajau Tutorial Class, a core mission of the Bajau Village Learning Center, Inc. (BVLCI), supports Bajau children in Bongao by strengthening their reading, writing, and math skills. The program serves grades one to twelve, as well as out-of-school youth, with groups organized by learning level. Every Sunday, students gather at BVLCI, guided by sixteen SSVP ASSIST-A Student Scholars and members of the SSVP Holy Rosary Conference, who volunteer their time to teach. Beyond tutoring, the initiative seeks to inspire children to value education, bridging the gap between those who have already found their path and those just beginning their journey.
Alongside nurturing their minds, BVLCI ensures children are nourished physically by serving meals after classes and including them in daily feeding with the Kindergarten group. They also receive school supplies, helping them stay full, equipped, and ready to learn.
