VOICES AND FACES FROM THE GROUND

Celebrating Christmas with the Bajaus

The Bajau Village Learning Center glowed with December’s promise. On the 19th, children and parents of the tutorial class filled the room with joy; on the 21st, the SSVP members gathered in Christmas fellowship.

The Bajaus, one of the Indigenous Peoples of the Philippines, carry within them a quiet strength—peace-loving, bound by family, and guided by their faith in one Supreme God. Though not Christians, they await Christmas with anticipation, for it is a season when they feel seen, cherished, and blessed. Gifts shared by others become signs of love, and their prayers rise in gratitude to the God who hears them. For our part, we prepared many joys so that their day of thanksgiving might be one of warmth and celebration. At the heart of the Christmas celebration was a program designed to bring everyone together in a festive atmosphere. Parents and children participated in the games, dances, and presentations. Each activity was a way of affirming their dignity and the unique contributions they bring.

This family day was unlike any other. Excitement filled the Bajau Village Learning Center as parents and children arrived dressed in their finest, some children proudly wearing superhero costumes, others in native attire, and many in gowns that turned the event into a pageant of joy. In those moments, they were transformed—little princes and princesses, radiant with dignity. Their gratitude to the Sisters was heartfelt, as parents participated eagerly, finding joy in games and fellowship. Gifts of milk, Milo, and prizes crowned the celebration, and a meal prepared for 180 Bajau children and parents brought the day to a close, leaving behind memories of love and thanksgiving.

Another day of celebrating Jesus' birth was spent in the tutorial class. This is a mixed group of children in Grades One to 12 and out-of-school youth, totaling 54 students. They were assisted by the sixteen (16) SSVP-Assist-A-Student volunteers and five (5) SSVP Holy Rosary Conference members. The day brimmed with parlor games, dances, and nourishing meals. By the end, the room was filled not only with laughter but with gratitude, each face radiant with happiness.

Through the DC-IPS grant and the kindness of donors and benefactors, the unbounded generosity of God was revealed—a blessing poured into our community. In celebrating the birth of Jesus, we rediscovered the salvation He brings, most especially when the Christmas story was shared with those who are poorest, living in the peripheries. Truly, His presence was felt among us: the fragile child who is powerful, the tiny one who is mighty in love, guiding us by His example.
